Little Fern Trail: One of Austin’s Best-Kept Secrets

The streams are flowing! If you like tranquil waterfalls, peaceful pools, and the occasional stepping-stone crossing, you will love the Little Fern Trail. The stunning trail, just 25 minutes from downtown Austin, gets its name from the vibrant ferns that are scattered along the trail.

The Little Fern Trail offers lots of shade being surrounded by many trees and vibrant, lush ferns. You will find cozy off-paths and little places to sit nearby, making it the perfect picnic or meditation spot.

Need-to-Know:

  • This is a beginner-intermediate hike. It is part of the River place Trail totaling 3 miles with 2,700 built-in steps!

  • Little fern trail is free, but it is $10 to hike the main trail called River Place on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash

  • Side street parking is available
